Some of us work outside of the home. Even if we work at home, we probably have carved out a secluded environment. Regardless of what form of transportation we take, or where our office is located, it is not uncommon for the day to pass with us rarely giving a thought to our child. Our lives can be very busy and it makes sense that we would focus on our work. But being focused on solving a problem or getting a project done doesn’t require that we drop awareness of our child. Our child is always with us. It is as if while we are en route to the office, our child is silently sitting on our shoulders or holding our hand. Were this the case, we would be pleasantly reminded of our child’s presence in our lives throughout the day. With mindful parenting practice, we can maintain this awareness. And maintaining this awareness will add a sense of joy and quietude to what may be an otherwise complex and disruptive day. It may also facilitate our accomplishing work at a higher level of productivity and with greater insight. While you are traveling to work, take just a moment to imagine your child holding your hand or sitting in the seat next to or behind you. Envision your child in the rearview mirror, and if applicable, connect this moment to the verse “Driving Your Child to School:”
