When it is raining, and we are driving, and the windshield wipers are on, a wonderful confluence of events takes place. Whether they are tears of joy or tears of sorrow, the earth is touching us. The rain drops are wiped away, as we wipe away tears, in time with the pulsing of the windshield wiper. The blades’ movement establishes a rhythm like the rhythm of a beating heart. At this time, allow yourself to hear your child’s heart beating loudly and consider the joys and sorrows life brings to us. For purposes of mindful parenting, it is not necessary to actually remember a happy or sad event (though that can be a powerful meditation). Simply appreciate that your child lives at this moment on this earth, and that you can connect more deeply with his life force by identifying the rhythm in front of you with that of his beating heart.
