While we may not realize it, one of the most rhythmic and repetitive acts in which we engage is walking. We developed our gait when we were young and it remains fairly constant. It is a means to get from one place to another, from one room in our house to another, or from a building to the car. It is so automatic that we may not even be aware we are doing it. Our child’s heartbeat is another natural rhythm we may take for granted. Each time we take a step on this earth, let us feel the beating of our child’s heart. A shortened version that may make recitation of this powerful verse easier to do more often is:
With every step
My
child’s heart beats.
You may find that it is difficult to slow down to match the pace of a beating heart. Try as we may, our bodies want to speed up. We feel clumsy. We become aware of others watching us move too slowly. Most of this is in our head. No one notices, cares, or detects that we are walking too slowly. What’s actually happening is that by slowing down, we become more aware of what is happening around us. You will notice leave flittering on branches, ants crawling on the ground, a gentle breeze caressing your face. You will be surprised to learn what actually is taking place at this moment – to appreciate that your child’s heart is beating.
