Among the many milestones that mark a lifetime, the first day of school is an especially poignant one. It marks the beginning of the formal educational process. The profundity and excitement associated with one’s first day of school is such that we probably remember our own, all those years ago. How we have changed! Because attending school quickly falls into a routine, this day marks a special opportunity to appreciate that a journey is about to begin. It is a journey that our children embark on by themselves. And, for the rest of their lives, as they continue to learn, they will continue to grow and change, as will we. As we prepare for the first day, as we walk with our child into the classroom, and as we listen to our child share her thoughts, feelings, and concerns over what it means to be going to school by herself, we breathe deeply and reflect on this wonderful adventure. This verse can be recited every year when the school year begins, and is applicable each time our child embarks on a new experience.
